The Wonder of Wands: Part Two

Hitachi is still my own personal favourite despite only having two settings:
low and high.

As I said in my previous post the orginal magic wands were originally designed in the late 1960s as a muscle relaxer for those hard to reach spots. Once revealed as a masturbatory aid – providing clitoral stimulation and orgasm – many similar devices have expanded and defined the market over the past half a century.

But a concerned Hitachi felt it had to ensure that the device wasn't mis-sold and it's own reputation confused with a sex toy. In the early noughties it changed the name from Hitachi Wand to Original Magic Wand after a revealing episode of Sex and the City created an explosion of interest and demand. Since 2014 the famous 'massager' has been renamed again and is now 'Magic Wand Original'.

Getting hold of a branded Hitachi isn’t as easy as it sounds.
However, as most UK retailers don’t stock them they are mostly imported (into the UK) from the States. Whether it is due to only having two settings, being an established brand or a definitive piece of engineering is arguable, but it definitely has more power than any others I have tried.

As I have previously mentioned surge protection is a bit of an issue and as far as I am aware the original wands aren’t manufactured in or for the UK market.  Using a US plug with an RCD attached holding the thing is incredibly weighty and abit cumbersome when connected to the socket. I personally get around this by using an extension cord with a built in RCD.

Nowadays if you go to any sex shop or fetish market there are often a number of different multispeed wands available all with UK fitted plugs. They tend to vary with a number of options from 7 to twenty speed settings so that you can find the best most orgasmic setting for your personal requirements.

One other improvement that has been made over the past few years is that a number of companies have created smaller, battery operated, or rechargeable wands.  Though this is great if you travel or need to be a little more discreet with your toy collection they don’t always have the same power capacity that you would expect from their wired-up counterparts.

Lelo seems to be at the forefront of this more 'portable' market.
Many of the Lelo wand devices are ergonomically designed, rechargeable and often retail between £60 and £80 – this is great value for a truly quality product.

You can also pick up magic wands on eBay, Amazon or from fetish market retailers for anything between £15 and £50. But, buying from a shop is always a better option. The risks involved with plugging in a device bought for £12 on a site such as eBay for example , are higher than when bought from a more accountable and dedicated adult toy retailer. Plus they also often have wands on display that you can try out and test...  well, on your nose is usually best, as it’s one of the most sensitive places on the body besides you know where...

In the unlikely event that there is a problem, there are staff available to assist you. Moreover, legal protection afforded you as well when you make purchases this way.

In addition there are now a wide variety of attachments for magic wands. Often made from silicone they are relatively easy to clean and usually range in price between £10 and £20 fitting most of the corded wands on the market. These attachments allow you to use the wand as an insertable toy or as a penis massager. I personally have a his and hers pair in my toy box that I purchased online from extremerestraints.com and I suspect that at some point in the future I will add a couple more attachments to my collection as they are a great way to make a simple and fun toy more... perversatile.

Enjoy your toys!

NYC-based photographer and filmmaker Clayton Cubbitt's project Hysterical Literature attempts to explore feminism, mind versus body, distraction portraiture, and the contrast between culture and sexuality. No, it's not porn, having passed the Miller Test. Since August of 2012, the video series has been watched over 30 million times in 200 countries. The performers were consensually subjected to magic wand play under the table by the artist's assistants. More answers to your questions about this here.

Today in part one, I'm talking about the lovely massage device originally designed by Hitachi, now globally known as the magic wand.

I was first introduced to magic wands by a rather sadistic dom around seven or eight years ago. He took it upon himself to make a very ropey (see what I did there...) harness tying the thing to my clit while I was restrained and blindfolded. Of course he waited just long enough to skyrocket my nerves and curiosity before he flipped the switch.

But when he did I was instantly propelled at light speed towards the first of five orgasms, and by the third I was screaming and begging him to both switch it off... and give me more.

Previous to this rather startling experience I had only seen magic wands in a couple of porn flicks from America's kink.com productions. At the time they cost in excess of £100 and had to be ordered and shipped from America with a plug adapter to be able to use it in the UK, which made attaching it to an RCD surge protector device nigh on impossible due simply to the weight of the adapter. To confirm then:
Any sex toy you have to plug into a socket should be plugged into an RCD surge protector device.

A safety RCD (
residual current device) circuit breaker (above left and below right) can be used with any 240v appliance and is usually used with 'power tools'. protects against the risk of electrocution and are usually approved to  european standards. It works by switching off electricity automatically if there is a fault.

Since the late noughties magic wands have dramatically decreased in price.
In fact they have cropped up in their various forms all over the market as the must-have toy in any good kinksters toy box. Magic wands also now come with multiple settings and in a variety of colours, and some are even battery-operated (woo-hoo! for kink on the go!). Even my chiropractor has one, though he does use it for its actual purpose. It never fails to make me smile when he whips it out and rubs it on my feet or hips (This is the magic wand I'm talking about, you perve).

To detail then, magic wands are about a foot in length with a long handle and a round head just smaller than a tennis ball. At first glance it looks as if the bulbous head should rotate but in fact it only vibrates... and boy, does it vibrate.

Originally these remarkable gadgets were designed back in the late 1960s, not as sex toys, but as massage aids to relieve muscle stress. Quickly though they were adopted as a masturbation aid: largely through the advocacy of sex-positive feminist Betty Dodson,

educator
and author of the million-selling onanist
classic, Sex for One.

Hitachi covered themselves by suggesting they should not be used on soft tissue such as nipples, the vagina or penis. At this point it is worth noting that repeated or prolonged use of magic wands can actually desensitize an area. They may also irritate the hair follicles in your skin, especially if you shave. However they are a wonderful bit of kit when used sensibly within a play scene. I have also found them to be a little on the noisy side (both in the vibration noise and the “Oh, Oh, OH MY GOD!!” factor. (Why not wear a gag? - JR)

So if discretion is particular concern a magic wand may actually not be for you.
But if they are, in The Wonder of Wands: Part Two we will take a look at where and how to purchase these substantial and celebrated devices.

For now, enjoy your toys!

Getting Out and Into a Few of My Favourite Things

I'm an addict.
Possibly a klepto, but definitely a kinky femme that absolutely loves latex and impact play (not two things that often go well together I should point out). I have an ever-growing and evolving collection of fetish toys which has now outgrown the toy box I used to store them in... when I first tip-toed into the wonderful world of kink a little over ten years ago.

And yet, I am still constantly on the lookout for various toys, implements, everyday objects and pervertables that will add perhaps more than twice the spice to the fun I can have in the bedroom.

I should perhaps explain at this point that I am a single woman
.
And although I switch between both sub and domme roles depending on the partner I am playing with, I have a simple rule for any toy I'm going to use: that I will always test or use it on myself before inflicting it on another.

Why am I telling you this?
And what the hell is the point of writing this blog?

Well simply put, I want to share what I know about kinky toys.
In the wake of the 'mummy porn' (sic) phenomenon countless shops, retailers, and online sellers have sprung up offering a vast array of kink-related items in an attempt to cash in on the current trend in the market.

Some of these toys are cheap and some expensive (to say the very least).
There are sellers on eBay peddling poorly made, imported from Asia, potentially dangerous items, and there are those quality items, handcrafted, well made, and a joy to use on which it is worth spending a few extra of your hard-earned pennies to not only improve your sex life but keep you safe in the process.

Whether you are taking your first tentative steps into this wonderfully vast kink, fetish and BDSM realm, or like me have been exploring all that BDSM has to offer for many years, my hope is that this blog will both be enlightening and informative to help you in making the best decision when buying and trying new sex toys.

Of course my real aim is to have a perfect excuse to buy and test lots more toys.
...And with some gorgeous men along the way without the label of being a klepto-maniacal sex addicted kinkster.

Plus hey, it’s truly an orgasmic hobby.

In my next few posts I'm going to be really
getting out, getting into, onto, well, definitely trying out... a few of my favourite items. Next post we'll be looking at Magic Wands, and no, no, no... I'm not talking Harry Potter... or the magician with a rabbit and hat. Hopefully it be like the intention I have for my blog...This will be a different kind of magic.

Enjoy your toys
